STEM Classroom in Quang Ngai: Nurturing an Innovative Mindset and Empowering Students to Master Technology

On December 16, the Quang Ngai Department of Education and Training, in coordination with the Vietnam National Industry – Energy Group (Petrovietnam) and Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Joint Stock Company (BSR), held the inauguration ceremony and officially put into operation a STEM classroom at Le Khiet High School. This is one of 100 STEM classrooms implemented nationwide by Petrovietnam in 2025, aiming to promote hands-on education, innovation, and the development of science and technology human resources.

Attending the inauguration ceremony, on behalf of Quang Ngai Province, were Comrade Nguyen Hoang Giang - Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee; Comrade Nguyen The Hai - Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Council; and Comrade Nguyen Ngoc Thai - Director of the Quang Ngai Department of Education and Training.

Representing Petrovietnam were Comrade Le Manh Hung – Chairman of the Members’ Council; Comrade Tran Quang Dung – Standing Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee; together with members of the Members’ Council and the Board of Management.

On behalf of BSR were Comrade Bui Ngoc Duong – Chairman of the Board of Directors; Comrade Nguyen Viet Thang – President & CEO; along with members of the Board of Directors and the Executive Board.

Over many years of development, Le Khiet High School has been recognized as a cradle for high-quality student training in Quang Ngai Province. The school has consistently played a leading role in academic movements, scientific research, and innovation. It boasts numerous students who have achieved high awards in national excellent student competitions, science and engineering contests, youth innovation competitions, and academic arenas at both domestic and international levels. In recent years, in response to the requirements for comprehensive and fundamental education reform, the school has identified STEM education and scientific research as strategic directions, aiming to equip students with critical thinking, creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills - core competencies for citizens in the digital era.

According to Mr. Tran Quang Hong, Principal of Le Khiet High School, although the school has always placed strong emphasis on developing scientific research and youth innovation activities, limitations in facilities and specialized practice spaces have remained a major challenge. The sponsorship and operation of the STEM classroom under the STEM Innovation Petrovietnam program not only address infrastructure constraints but also open up a modern, practical, and sustainable educational approach.

The school is striving to become a nationally accredited educational institution at a high level, with synchronized and modern teaching equipment, fulfilling its mission of discovering, training, and nurturing talent. In this context, the demand for a STEM classroom is particularly urgent. Le Khiet High School is honored to be one of three schools in Quang Ngai Province selected to receive Petrovietnam’s funding for the construction of a STEM classroom. This represents significant attention and encouragement from Quang Ngai Province, Petrovietnam, and BSR, contributing to the enhancement of the school’s overall education quality, Mr. Tran Quang Hong shared.

The STEM Innovation Petrovietnam classroom at Le Khiet High School is comprehensively equipped with modern systems, including smart interactive boards, AI–IoT systems, VEX robotics kits, 3D printers, CNC cutting machines, and experimental kits on energy and the environment. The learning space is designed with reference to international education standards such as FabLab, NGSS, ISTE, and CSTA, while remaining aligned with Vietnam’s 2018 General Education Program.

For students of Le Khiet High School, the STEM classroom offers an entirely new learning experience. Access to modern equipment and project-based learning methods makes research ideas more feasible and systematic, while also enhancing students’ confidence in participating in science, engineering, and innovation competitions within and beyond the province.

Comrade Nguyen Ngoc Thai, Director of the Quang Ngai Department of Education and Training, emphasized that STEM education is not only an advanced educational model but also a concrete solution for shaping students’ scientific research thinking, creativity, life skills, and ability to apply professional knowledge to solve real-world problems.

“The STEM classroom inaugurated today is vivid evidence of translating the Party’s guidelines and resolutions into educational practice. It is not merely a modern learning space that enables teachers and students of Le Khiet High School, in particular, and the education sector of Quang Ngai Province, in general, to organize teaching activities, creative experiences, and scientific and technical research. More importantly, it contributes to improving education quality, discovering and nurturing gifted students to meet the country’s increasingly high training demands. The STEM classroom is a place that inspires a passion for scientific research, nurtures an innovative spirit, helps students gradually master technology, shapes independent thinking, vitality, and aspirations for contribution,” he stressed.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Comrade Le Manh Hung – Chairman of the Members’ Council of Petrovietnam, noted that STEM education is an approach that emphasizes practice to better understand theory. Learning takes place through hands-on activities and problem-solving, while also facilitating updates and connections with advanced education systems, thereby enabling effective application in Vietnam’s education and training activities. Recognizing the practical benefits of STEM education, Petrovietnam has coordinated with the Ministry of Education and Training and Vietnam Television to implement the STEM Innovation Petrovietnam program.

With the STEM classroom and the enthusiasm of the teachers and students of Le Khiet High School, Comrade Le Manh Hung expressed his confidence and hope that this gift from Petrovietnam and BSR would contribute, albeit modestly, to improving the educational environment and supporting the school’s teaching methods. Ultimately, it is expected to help nurture many talented individuals for the country, especially among the younger generation driven by passion and dedication.

Following the handover, in addition to sponsoring the STEM classroom, the school’s teaching staff will receive training on equipment operation, develop sample STEM themes, and establish a STEM Club in line with the overall orientation of the STEM Innovation Petrovietnam program. This is considered a crucial step to ensure the effective utilization of the STEM classroom and the realization of its intended objectives and investment value. Beyond serving Le Khiet High School alone, the STEM Innovation Petrovietnam classroom is envisioned to operate under an open model, becoming a hub for connection, sharing, and dissemination of STEM education activities among schools across Quang Ngai Province and nationwide.

The STEM Innovation Petrovietnam program was initiated from the ideas of General Secretary To Lam and officially launched on September 21, 2025, to complete and put into operation 100 STEM practice classrooms within 100 days across 34 provinces and cities nationwide. In Quang Ngai, the STEM classroom at Le Khiet High School is expected to become a key nucleus of hands-on education, contributing to the formation of a knowledge-sharing network and spreading the spirit of innovation throughout the province’s general education system.
